About Tough Resin
What is Tough Resin?
Tough resin closes the gap between SLA detail and engineering thermoplastic durability. It hits roughly the impact tolerance of ABS while preserving the sub-100-µm surface quality that makes resin prints worth the extra step. We use it for working snap-fits, low-volume tooling and any prototype that has to be reviewed by hand without snapping.
Properties
Spec sheet- Density
- 1.16 g/cm³
- Max use temp
- ~65 °C
- Tensile strength
- ~55 MPa, ABS-like impact strength
- Layer adhesion
- Monolithic
- Finish quality
- Smooth, slightly more matte than standard resin
- Indoor / outdoor
- Indoor + brief outdoor (still UV-sensitive)
- Food-safe
- Not food-safe
Best for
- Snap-fit prototypes and living-hinge parts
- Functional parts that need both detail and impact tolerance
- Low-volume tooling — soft jaws, alignment fixtures
- Engineering review models that get passed around the room
- Patterns for vacuum forming and cold casting
Avoid for
- Long-term sun exposure — UV will still embrittle it over months
- Sustained loads above 50 °C

Common questions
Questions buyers ask
Can I use tough resin for end-use parts?
For low-cycle, indoor end-use — yes. For high-cycle mechanical loads or outdoor service, we recommend Carbon-PA or ABS instead.
Tough resin vs ABS — which is better for a snap-fit prototype?
Tough resin gives better surface finish and tighter tolerances. ABS is cheaper and more thermally stable. For one-off review models, resin wins; for production-intent prototypes, ABS.
Will tough resin yellow over time?
Slowly, yes — like all photopolymers. A clear UV-blocking topcoat extends colour stability if the part will see windows.
