About ABS

What is ABS?

ABS is the plastic Lego is moulded from — stiff, glossy, heat-tolerant and post-processable. On a 3D printer it demands an enclosed chamber and patience (it warps if it cools unevenly), but the reward is a part that survives an Indian car dashboard at noon and that you can drill, tap, sand and acetone-smooth into a near-injection-moulded finish.

~100 °C
Tensile strength
~40 MPa with high impact strength

Not food-safe
Best for
  • Electronic enclosures and project boxes
  • Automotive interior parts — dashboard clips, vents, mounts
  • Prototypes intended for post-processing (sanding, acetone smoothing, painting)
  • Tooling jigs that need impact tolerance
  • Snap-fit parts where PLA would shatter
Avoid for
  • Long unsupported spans — warping is a real failure mode
  • Parts that contact food or skin chronically
  • Direct outdoor UV exposure without paint

Common questions

Questions buyers ask

Why does ABS cost more than PLA if the filament is cheaper?
Print success rate. ABS warps if the chamber fluctuates, so we run it on enclosed printers, slower, with more first-layer rework. The studio time is what you're paying for.
Can you acetone-smooth ABS for me?
Yes. Acetone vapour smoothing is offered as a finishing add-on and turns the layer-line texture into an injection-moulded gloss.
Is ABS or PETG better for an outdoor enclosure?
PETG, every time. ABS yellows and embrittles in UV unless you paint it. PETG handles UV natively.
